Weekly Blog #2

This week we transitioned from our time on the boat to living on the farm. Wednesday was our first day on the farm and we were able to meet our mentor, Aragorn, and his family, and get settled into the farm. Thursday, our first day working, was tough because the work we were doing was not what we expected, but thankfully our first day was mostly cloudy and rainy, which was nice because we weren’t working in the blistering heat. I was disappointed that we had spent half of the hours, on our first day, weeding, instead of learning about all the things that they grow on the farm. Sadly, we spent even more time weeding on our second day, but we started at 6:00 instead of 7:00 to finish our work for the day before it got too hot.
Even though the work here on the farm is strenuous, it is a good way to be involved on the island. I learned mostly how to weed without hurting your back, but also about some new fruit that I had never tried. Cat and I tried some bananas that were grown on the farm, sucked the inside out of a passionfruit, and tried another fruit that I can’t remember the name of that was white and slimy like a coconut, but had the consistency of a wet paper towel. It was surprisingly better than it sounds, but a little bit odd texturally. There are many cats that run around here on the farm, and I learned that, even though prior to this trip I was afraid of cats, they are actually really cute and cuddly, but still not as good as dogs.
In the afternoons we continued our diving, an got to see some cool reefs. My favorite part was being able to swim through a small cave and out the other side of the reef. We also saw some cool fish including, trigger fish, puffer fish, reef sharks, and some more damsel fish. For all of your following our blog, no, Cat and I have not been able to find a baby trunkfish yet :(.

Even though our time on the farm hasn’t been what I was expecting, it has been really nice being able to get to know Drake, the farm manger, and hear about his perspective on life. Hopefully next week we will be able to do more farming and less weeding, and get to explore new parts of the island.
